“Make up anything you want to be” – Will Hamilton (Age 3)
These inspirational words were what my son chose to say when we were making our 2019 family new year’s resolutions. I went with the much more attainable, yet still very important, “no nighttime snacking”. For many months my wife and I bounced this quote around the house in tongue-in-cheek scenarios as needed because, well, how adorable right?
Maybe my son is on to something.
Make up anything you want to be, huh? Well, I kinda want to be a sports writer. Come to think of it, I’ve kinda wanted to be one for a long time. It just fell into one of those dream job categories, like rock star, pro wrestler, or stay-at-home dad. These positions are not attainable for regular weirdos guys like me.
Screw it.
The Warm Take is my shot at being a sports writer. Thank you, son, for showing me that I can “make up anything I want to be“.
One of the philosophies behind the branding of this site is that you don’t always have to have a “hot take”. For the uninitiated, hot takes are wacky and oftentimes forced opinions, and a crutch used by many in sports media to elicit a response from readers/listeners/viewers at the expense of accuracy. I mean, if a hot take happens organically, that’s great. But I am much more focused on being reasonable and nuanced, and if I can entertain you along the way, then I will have done my job.
Logic and humor will rule the day at The Warm Take. A lot of time will be spent in the gray area and away from the extremes. Sure, some topics get my blood boiling every now and again, but I like to take a more cerebral approach to my writing. I enjoy analyzing behaviors and words, taking multiple perspectives, and reading between the lines in an attempt to find the truth. Above all, make up your own mind. I’m not here to tell you what to think. I hate it when people regurgitate someone else’s opinion word for word. Use your own brain, it is very powerful. Take all, none, or parts of my opinions and use them for your own.
Much of my content will cover the Detroit sports landscape because Detroit is who I am and what I care about. I was born in the city, raised in the city, am a proud University of Michigan graduate, and recently began serving as a Literacy Interventionist in Detroit public schools. This city is embedded in my DNA.
I will always support my hometown teams, but right now I am sad. So very sad. I need this blog as a form of therapy to get through all of these rebuilds, unmet expectations, and, well, just about everything the Lions have done to me the past 30 years.
At minimum, this site will be a place to record my thoughts on various topics that I care about. I hope it becomes more than that, but I will let the content speak for itself. I am a father of three amazing kids, and in a way this site is my fourth child, albeit not as cute. But I do aspire for this site to be like it’s human sisters and brother in other ways. Smart, funny, and honest come to mind. This site would also not be possible without my superstar wife, whose support allows me to take a swing (sports analogy!) at this new adventure.
